WASHINGTON, D.C. (July 20, 2026) – Cygnal released new data on voters’ views and use of GLP‑1 medications from our July National Voter Trends (NVT) poll of 1,500 likely general election voters (conducted June 30 – July 1).
“The picture that emerges is of voters layering new tools on top of work they were already doing to increase their overall health,” said Alex Tarascio, Principal and Pollster at Cygnal. “Older voters are treating GLP‑1s more like medicine, younger voters are using them more for how they look and feel, and both groups sit on top of a base of diet, exercise, and trial‑and‑error. For any company in the GLP‑1 space, that means you are not talking to a single ‘vanity’ market, you are talking to distinct segments who see these drugs as one more lever they can pull in a broader effort to lose weight or stay healthy.”
Data vs. Dogma:
Top Takeaways:
“The assumption is that GLP-1s are just vanity drugs for the affluent, but the data says otherwise,” Tarascio said. “More Republicans are current users than Democrats. A third of the electorate is already in this market, and two thirds of voters support Medicare covering the drugs. The vanity drug caricature falls apart when you look at who’s actually using GLP-1s and who wants them covered. These are mainstream drugs now used across both parties, by people who have already used diet and exercise to stay healthy. It gives campaigns, health plans, and companies a chance to better understand what motivates people instead of making assumptions.”
“GLP‑1s are now part of how people think about their monthly budget and their, not just a story they see on TV or social media,,” said Brent Buchanan, Founder and CEO of Cygnal. “Voters are comparing what they hear about these drugs to what they and in their friends can actually afford, and that pulls the debate out of the culture war lane and onto the kirchen table, especially when they see stories about insurance and Medicare coverage. Any party that wants to lead on health policy now has to decide whether GLP‑1s are something they want to make easier to access.”
“Most people have begun to understand that treating obesity is real medical care, and it’s good to see the data reflect that. Obesity is a chronic disease, and the patients I see have usually worked at this for years before they reach for a medication. A GLP-1 is one effective tool, and the care around it, the ongoing follow-up, is what turns it into real results,” said Dr. Jessica Duncan, Chief Medical Officer of Ivim Health and a board-certified obesity medicine physician.
