Alabamians Split on Displaying Confederate Flag at Government Sites

Following Governor Robert Bentley’s decision to remove the Confederate flag from the Alabama Capitol grounds, Cygnal released a survey showing Alabamians approve of the decision by a slim majority. During a scientific Internet poll conducted from June 22-24, the Alabama-based communication and polling firm found that 51.2% of Alabamians do not think Alabama government buildings should display the Confederate flag.

“Talking about the Confederate flag in a state with our diverse and divisive history is tough, and this survey shows Alabama residents are pretty split on the issue,” stated Managing Partner Brent Buchanan. “Looking at the details of the poll shows our state’s rural resident more strongly believe the CSA flag should be on display at government buildings.”

Population density directly affected the beliefs of respondents. Only 39% of urban residents believed the Confederate flag should fly on government property, while 44% of the suburban population held the same belief. On the contrary, 57% of rural respondents supported display of the flag. Age was also a determinant of support. Those 55-64 years old supported the Confederate flag by 66% and individuals 65+ were at 59%. The lowest support was among 24-35 year olds (39%).

“Governor Bentley made a decision based on what he thought was right, and it appears that Alabamians agree with him,” concluded Buchanan.

Survey Methodology
Cygnal’s Internet poll was conducted June 22-24, 2015, with 961 Alabama residents participating. It has a margin of error between ±3.5%. Interviews were conducted using probability-based Internet survey methodology. Weighting was applied to ensure the results reflected the gender, age, and geographical distribution of Alabama’s population.
